Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered shows a carefully considered PC strategy from Sony

Last night's State of Play brought us many surprises, but few could've expected we'd be seeing Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered coming to PC.

Launching on August 12, the newest Spider-Man title will be ported with the help of Nixxes Software, a support studio Sony acquired last year to help with PC ports. Much like the PS5 version of Remastered, this appears to be a straight port with few new extras. That includes the City That Never Sleeps DLC, meaning PC players are getting the full package.

But that isn't all Sony has planned. While it wasn't mentioned during State of Play, a PlayStation Blog(opens in new tab) post separately revealed Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales will join Remastered on Steam and Epic Games Store later this year. Unlike Remastered, there is no set release date for Miles yet, although it will launch in Fall 2022.

Finally, Insomniac Games revealed new sales figures for Marvel's Spider-Man, and it's hit an incredible milestone. "I’m both ecstatic and humbled to share that Marvel’s Spider-Man series now has sold through more than 33 million copies globally, as of May 15, 2022," the studio explained on the PlayStation Blog.

Sony's PC investment seems to be paying off

Last September, a major leak from the Nvidia GeForce Now game streaming service detailed a number of top Playstation games that were supposedly coming to the PC. And many of the titles listed have since been confirmed for PC ports. God of War released in January, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection arrives this year, while Returnal and Sackboy: a Big Adventure are heavily rumored. Curiously, that list made no mention of Marvel's Spider-Man, making this more of a surprise than most.

Sony isn't prioritizing simultaneous releases on PC and PS4/PS5, not like Microsoft does for PC and Xbox Series X/S or Xbox One. While that's not great for PC players, it means Sony games still have timed exclusivity on consoles before arriving elsewhere. It means PlayStation remains the priority without restricting these experiences.

Right now, it's paying off. God of War saw high praise when it launched, joining existing ports like Horizon Zero Dawn and reportedly selling over two million copies. There's no word on whether the (currently) PS5 exclusive Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will also come to PC, and God of War Ragnarok similarly remains unconfirmed. At this stage, you can't help but feel like both are inevitable.

How The Amazing Spider-Man Finally Settled the Organic Web-Shooters Debate

The Amazing Spider-Man may not be a fan-favorite Spidey flick, but it settled one issue about the character onscreen for good.

Organic webs or mechanical? As nonsensical as that question sounds in 2022, believe me that a little over two decades ago it was spoken about with the hushed severity of religion during the Reformation. Do you think Spider-Man should have organic web-shooters or mechanical? If you answered incorrectly in certain parts of the early wild west days of the internet, you could find yourself cast out from digital communities like a leper. In retrospect, it was perhaps a prelude to how fan communities would organize around social media.

This tumultuous upheaval among Marvel fandom was fallout from the very first big budget Spider-Man movie starring Tobey Maguire in 2002. In that movie, director Sam Raimi—along with undoubtedly a slew of producers and studio executives at Columbia Pictures/Sony—made the choice to give Maguire’s Peter Parker organic web fluid. The concept was a leftover from the unmade Spider-Man movie that was being prepared by director James Cameron in the period between Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) and True Lies (1994). Cameron lit on the idea of using webbing as an unsubtle metaphor for puberty in which his hero would awaken with sticky sheets.

While Raimi didn’t take the metaphor quite that far—although you should note Maguire’s Peter only first notices his organic webbing after having a conversation with the girl of his dreams, Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst)—the director did say at the time it would add to the character’s sense of alienation. Plus, if Peter got all the other powers of a radioactive/genetically modified spider, why not webbing? So Spider-Man made a change that some fans embraced and others did not over the course of the next five years.

Alas, however, things were never really settled in the world of online fandom, and the debate would rise again when Sony announced it planned to reboot the Web-Head’s franchise a mere 10 years after that first Maguire movie with The Amazing Spider-Man (2012).

Largely unloved today for its repetitive storytelling mechanics that hit most of the exact same beats from the first Raimi movie, as well as its truly awful sequel, Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man, which starred Andrew Garfield as Peter, is more often ignored than celebrated by fandom. It’s part of that two-film aberration between the giddy highs of the early/mid-2000s’ pop culture behemoth embodied by Maguire and the modern MCU iteration of the character played by Tom Holland.

However, The Amazing Spider-Man got a precious few things right back in its day, including how it settled for good and all the “organics or mechanical web-shooters” debate. And the man to thank for that is, believe it or not, comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis.

One of the premier Marvel writers in this century, Bendis was the co-creator of the Ultimate Spider-Man comic book series in 2000, which has influenced to varying degrees every screen iteration of Spider-Man that came afterward. He also famously co-created Miles Morales in Ultimate Fallout #4 in 2011. It was during this prolific wallcrawling period that Sony brought Bendis into the office for a pre-production meeting on The Amazing Spider-Man. He was there to settle a little debate the suits were having.

As Bendis told Yahoo in 2015, “They sat me down in Amy Pascal’s office with this big roomful of producers and writers and directors, and she looked at me and said, ‘Organic web-shooters or mechanical web-shooters?’ I said, ‘mechanical,’ and half the table said, ‘Goddamn it!’ They were mad because I was clearly the deciding vote, even though I didn’t know that. So when I see the mechanical web-shooters, I feel a little happiness. I feel like I did something good in the world.”

For a certain breed of fandom, we imagine that feels  a bigger contribution to the cinematic Spidey mythos than the invention of Miles. Which is a bit of a shame because, first of all, Miles is the best thing to happen to Spider-Man comics in the last 15 years (movies too), and secondly because it seems arbitrary that Peter can climb walls but not do the one thing spiders are most known for.

Nevertheless, the subject was so settled that after The Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel Studios felt comfortable goofing on the topic in their patented wink, wink and nudge, nudge, fan service-y way. Thus in last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which featured Maguire, Garfield, and Holland, the two younger Spider-Men are absolutely mortified to learn that their elder has organic web-shooters.

“Like does it just come out of your wrists,” asks Holland’s Spidey, “or does it come out of… anywhere else?” You know there was an alternate take where he asks if it comes out of his butt. But maybe they can save that gag for the next crossover?

Amazon says it will remove bot-like submissions and send invitations to remaining customers after verifying genuine customers. If the customer’s invitation to purchase is granted, they will receive an email with instructions on how to purchase the item. E-commerce giant Amazon is reportedly planning to roll out an invite-based ordering system for high-demand, low-supply products like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. According to TechCrunch, Amazon's new system is said to check the inventory shortages caused by scalpers (refers to a person who buys large quantities of in-demand items). Scalpers often tend to buy the latest electronics in bulk hoping that the items sell out. They then resell the items at a higher price. Since Scalpers cause the price of the products to go up, Amazon hopes that the new invite-only system will ensure genuine customers get to buy the products and doesn't go into the hands of scalpers. Amazon is launching the program in the United States, starting with PS5 and Xbox Series X gaming consoles sold on their platform. Amazon reportedly plans to expand the program to other countries and products in the future. "We work hard every day to provide customers with low prices, vast selection, and fast delivery," Llew Mason, VP, Consumer Engagement, Amazon told TechCrunch. "This includes developing a shopping experience where customers can purchase the items they're interested in without having to worry about bad actors buying and reselling them at a much higher price," he adds. How will Amazon's invite-based ordering system work? -Any customer with an Amazon account can request an invitation from the product detail page, at no additional cost (no Prime account needed) -Amazon's product page will show whether a particular product is a "high-demand item with limited quantities" while stating that it "won't be able to grant all requests" -Amazon says it will remove bot-like submissions and send invitations to remaining customers after verifying genuine customers by looking at factors like: the account's prior purchase history and when the account was created -If the customer's invitation to purchase is granted, they will receive an email with instructions on how to purchase the item -Amazon's email will detail how long the user has to complete the purchase and will also include a link to the item to place the order -Users can then add the item to their cart or select "Buy now" The report claims that the Amazon product page will also show the user how many hours and minutes the user has before their invitation expires. Amazon says it will grant more invitations to purchase as it receives more units of that item in stock. (Image Credit: Pexels) News Academie Francaise warned in February of a 'degradation that must not be seen as inevitable'. The changes in terms were issued in the official journal, making them binding on government workers. 'Cloud gaming' becomes 'jeu video en nuage' and 'eSports', will now be translated as 'jeu video de competition'. French officials on Monday continued their centuries-long battle to preserve the purity of the language, overhauling the rules on using English video game Jargon. While some expressions find obvious translations -- "pro-gamer" becomes "joueur professionnel" -- others seem a more strained, as "streamer" is transformed into "joueur-animateur en direct". The culture ministry, which is involved in the process, told AFP that the video game sector was rife with anglicisms that could act as "a barrier to understanding" for non-gamers. France regularly issues dire warnings of the debasement of its language from across the Channel, or more recently the Atlantic. Centuries-old language watchdog the Academie Francaise warned in February of a "degradation that must not be seen as inevitable". It highlighted terms including train operator SNCF's brand "Ouigo" (pronounced "we go") along with straightforward imports like "big data" and "drive-in". However, Monday's changes were issued in the official journal, making them binding on government workers. Among several terms to be given official French alternatives were "cloud gaming", which becomes "jeu video en nuage", and "eSports", which will now be translated as "jeu video de competition". The ministry said experts had searched video game websites and magazines to see if French terms already existed. The overall idea, said the ministry, was to allow the population to communicate more easily.
